Why ignition cylinders wear out
Inside the ignition cylinder are a series of spring-loaded wafers or pins that match the profile of your key. Every time you start the car, those wafers flex. Over tens of thousands of cycles they wear down and lose their tension, so the fit between key and cylinder gets sloppy. You might notice it first as a key that jiggles when it should feel snug, then a key that is hard to pull out, and eventually a key that will not turn at all.
