Locked Out of Your Car? Here’s Exactly What to Do
It happens to careful people all the time. You shut the door, the keys are on the seat, and now you’re standing in a parking deck talking to yourself. Take a breath. A car lockout is one of the most routine calls we run, and you’ll be back in soon. Here’s what to do, in order.
1. Make sure you’re safe first
If you’re on a roadside, in a dark lot, or it’s brutally hot or cold, get yourself somewhere safe before anything else. If a child or a pet is locked inside the car in the heat, this stops being a lockout and becomes an emergency: call 911 right away. Fire and police can get in fast, and no key is worth a kid in a hot car.
2. Check the obvious stuff
- Try every door and the trunk/hatch. People lock the driver’s door out of habit and leave a rear door open.
- Look for a spare. A partner, parent or roommate with a copy nearby can be faster than anyone.
- Got a keyless app? Many newer cars unlock from the manufacturer’s phone app. Worth thirty seconds to check.
- Roadside or insurance. Some policies and warranties include lockout service. Check your coverage before you pay out of pocket.
3. Skip the coat hanger and the YouTube tricks
We know the videos make it look easy. In practice, slim-jims and coat hangers on modern cars are a great way to rip the weather seal, scratch the paint, bend a door frame, or set off the airbag wiring or side-curtain sensors that now live inside the door. A $90 lockout turns into a $600 repair fast. Modern cars are not built like the ones in those old videos.
4. Call a real locksmith and have this ready
When you call us, telling us a few things gets you back in faster:
- Exactly where you are. Parking decks kill cell signal, so give us the deck level and a nearby store or entrance.
- Year, make and model. Helps us bring the right tools.
- Whether keys are visibly inside or actually lost. “Locked in” is a quick unlock. “Lost every key” means we cut and program a new one, which is a different job and price.
For a straight lockout, a real locksmith uses proper wedge-and-reach tools designed for your specific car. No damage, usually open in a few minutes.
5. What it should cost
Around Atlanta, a car lockout runs about $65 to $135, with a modest extra fee overnight or on holidays. You should get that number on the phone before anyone drives out. If a company won’t quote you until they arrive, or advertises a too-good “$19” price, be careful: that’s the setup for a much bigger bill at the curb.
Lost every key, not just locked out?
If there’s no spare anywhere, we can usually cut and program a brand-new key right where the car sits, no tow to a dealer. We’re NASTF registered, which is how legitimate locksmiths pull manufacturer key codes. Tell us the year, make and model and we’ll quote it.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take a locksmith to unlock a car?
Once we are on site, most standard car lockouts take just a few minutes with proper wedge-and-reach tools. The bigger variable is drive time. In our core Atlanta area that is often 10 to 20 minutes.
Can a locksmith open my car without damaging it?
Yes. A real locksmith uses tools made for your specific car and opens it without harming the paint, seals or door. The damage stories come from coat hangers and slim-jims on modern cars, which is exactly what to avoid.
My keys are locked in the trunk. Can you still help?
Usually yes. We can often get into the cabin and release the trunk from inside, or access the trunk directly depending on the car. Tell us the year, make and model when you call.
What if a child or pet is locked inside?
Call 911 immediately, especially in heat. Fire and police can get in fast and that is the safe call. You can phone a locksmith too, but a child or pet in a hot car is an emergency, not a routine lockout.
